| The plant has steroidal lactones-withanolides, withaferin. The principal constituents of its roots are the alkaloids somnine, somniferine, withanine, tropine, pseudotropine and anaferine. It is used in asthma and as a uterine sedative. It results in calmness, relaxation, reduction of anxiety, sleepiness. It has been also used for sexual vitality. Its alkaloids showed relaxant and antispasmodic effects (suppresses smooth muscle contraction) against several spasmogens on intestinal, urine, bronchial, tracheal and blood vascular muscles.
It is a rasayana agent in the indigenous system of medicine, Ayurveda. It helps in increasing the sense of well-being and improves sexual performance.

It's principal constituents are Zingiberene (alpha and beta- zingiberene) and Zingiberol. Ginger is valued in medicine as a carminative and stimulant to the gastro-intestinal tract. It is much in vogue as a household remedy for indigestion, relieves dyspepsia, flatulence and colic. Ginger is reported to contain an anti-histamic factor. It is included among anti-depressants and it forms an ingredient of some anti-narcotic preparations.
It is soothing for cough, olds, flu and other respiratory problems. |
